Allegheny Technologies Inc. temporarily closed two of its facilities this spring, in a cost-cutting measure. That hasn’t happened at the company’s Washington Plate Mill.

The plant, in Canton Township off Interstate 70, “has continued to operate without interruption,” company spokeswoman Natalie Gillespie said in an email Thursday. She said ATI is “taking all of the necessary precautions to keep our employees safe while producing the essential materials our customers need (during the coronavirus pandemic).

“ATI will continue to evaluate demand levels and operating rates and make adjustments as needed.”

About 250 employees work at the Canton location, nearly 200 of whom are members of the United Steelworkers. The mill is responsible for producing flat-rolled materials.

ATI temporarily idled powder metal facilities in Robinson and Oakdale in March and April. They’ve reopened since. ATI will close its Midland plant at the end of June, which the Beaver County Times reported was due to steel tariffs the Trump administration imposed on imports. About 100 workers will be affected.

The company is a specialty materials manufacturer based in Pittsburgh. It has 8,200 employees at 58 locations worldwide, 35 of them in the United States.
