Pittsburgh ushers in holidays with Light-Up Night

Robert Morris University Island Sport Center’s Figure Skating Academy will kick off Light-Up Night in Pittsburgh today with an on-ice interpretation of “The Polar Express” at 4:45 p.m. at PPG Plaza.
At 5 p.m., a musical theater performance by the Pittsburgh CLO Mini-Stars will begin. From 5:30 to 6 p.m., more than 300 individuals will carry Tribute of Light memorials around the ice rink. The Juan Vasquez Trio will perform in the food court from 5 to 9 p.m.
The ceremony culminates with the lighting of the 65-foot plaza Christmas tree by 3-year-old cancer survivor Camden Lookabaugh of New Kensington.
All proceeds from this event will benefit the American Cancer Society.
At Point State Park, the 14th Santa Spectacular will begin at 5 p.m. with the opening of the Wyndham Grand Winter Wonderland tents, followed by several new attractions and entertainment. A complete list of activities can be found at www.SantaSpectacular.com.
Highlights include a new lighting installation, with the city side of the park decorated with 12 LED “Ice Trees” and nearly 30 large snowflakes.
Also featured will be a stage show by rising teen star Greyson Chance, a laser display of Eat ‘n Park’s Christmas Star commercial celebrating 30 years and Santa’s arrival.
The evening will end with the traditional lighting of the 80-foot Tree of Lights and a theatrical fireworks-to-music finale.
