Community Action Southwest is seeking volunteers in Washington and Greene counties for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The program provides low-to moderate-income households with free tax-filing services, protecting residents from predatory or expensive filing services, and ensuring the families get the maximum return. CAS will offer VITA at various sites, including Canonsburg, Charleroi, Donora and Washington in Washington County and in Carmichaels and Jefferson in Greene County. Sites will be open in February and March. Community members interested in assisting with the program are asked to attend a Volunteer Open Houses at one of the following locations: n Community Action Southwest office, 58 E. Greene St., Waynesburg, 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8; n John K. Tener Library, 638 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 13; n Community Action Southwest office, 150 W. Beau St., Suite 304 , Washington, 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 14. Community Action does not require volunteers have prior tax-filing experience. Volunteers receive training and certification, with the option to earn their certification online. Individuals can volunteer as little as two hours each week. Flenniken Public Library board of directors will host a wine tasting at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at Carmichaels Senior Center, 100 Nemacolin Road. The event will feature area wineries, including Shields Demesne Winery, Thistlethwaite Vineyards and Ripepi Winery and Vineyard. A pasta dinner will be catered by Hartley Inn, and Bob Podish will provide guitar and vocal music. There also will be a gift basket raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at the library, from members of the board or online at www.flenniken.org. Proceeds benefit library operating expenses.
