Eleven Washington County 4-H clubs recently collected 8,928 pounds of food – or more than 4 tons – and supplies for the Greater Washington County Food Bank.

To add a little incentive, the Washington County Farm Bureau offered a monetary gift to the 4-H club that donated the most food. Vankirk Friendship won the prize, donating 2,921 pounds of food.

Other 4-H clubs that participated and the amount of food they collected were:

• 4 Leaf, 1,741 pounds

• Crossroads, 1,136 pounds

• Hickory Ag, 937 pounds

• Buffalo Ag., 699 pounds

• Pike Run, 515 pounds

• Clover Patch, 363 pounds

• Country Clovers, 342 pounds

• Golden Hoofs, 140 pounds

• Animal Antics, 80 pounds

• Cecil, 54 pounds.

This year’s food drive was sponsored by a grant from generationOn, which asks teens, adults and families, “What Will You Bring to the Table?”

The goal is to generate one million meals for children experiencing hunger in America. In response, youth from across the country are creating service projects that raise awareness and bring collective action. Washington County 4-H provided 7,440 meals.
