One Book Every Young Child will be celebrated with a special story time at 5:30 p.m. May 15. The statewide early learning initiative highlights both the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers and the vital role adults have fostering that development. “The Bus for Us,” written and illustrated by Suzanne Bloom, will be featured. Summer reading program registration is under way. Theme is “Dig Into Reading!” The summer kickoff festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 23. In conjunction with the reading clubs, the Family Literacy Department is enrolling children in their “Dig Into Reading: Beneath the Surface!” program, which focuses on keeping math and social studies skills sharp during the summer. Free lunches will be provided for children who participate throughout the summer by the Greater Pittsburgh Area Food Bank.

CitiBooks, a used books bookstore operated by Friends of Citizens Library in the lower level of the library, is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. CyberSmarts: Protecting Your Privacy Online will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 7 in the public meeting room. The program is designed for fifth- through eighth-graders and their parents. “CyberSmarts” is part of a digital learning course provided by Power Library. Stitching Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 13 in the conference room. Yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks will be provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own projects. Instructors will be available.
