Classical music fans can hear the principal players and special guests of the Washington Symphony Orchestra during the annual chamber ensemble concert at 3 p.m. March 10 at First Baptist Church, 101 S. College St., Washington.

Each year the WSO chamber ensemble presents “Up Close and Personal,” providing a number of selections featuring the orchestra’s principal musicians.

Matt Pienkowski, principal trumpet, will play a solo in Haydn’s “Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra.” Pienkowski, a Trinity High School graduate, studied music at West Virginia and Carnegie Mellon universities. While at Carnegie Mellon, he played as frequent principal trumpet in the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and wind ensemble.

Pienkowski has been the principal trumpet with the WSO since 2006. He frequently serves as principal trumpet of the Washington Community Theatre and has maintained a private studio for 10 years.

His long-term goal is to play in a major-market orchestra.

“I am pleased to have a special role at this chamber concert,” Pienkowski said. “Playing a solo is a way for me to share my music with those who enjoy the classics.”

The WSO’s string quartet, composed of Barbara Butler, Caryn Rogers, Andrew Adams and Greta Schottman, will be joined by guest pianist Harry Coleman. The five will then play “Quintet in A, Op. 81.” The WSO quartet plays at special events throughout the area and has built a regular following.

Tickets for the “Up Close and Personal” chamber performance are $10. They will be sold at the door the day of the concert. The only advance ticket sales are being conducted online at www.washsym.org. For more information, email info@washsym.org.
