The 17th annual Fort Henry Days will be held today and Sunday at site 1 at Oglebay Park, Wheeling, W.Va.
Battle re-enactments will focus on the year 1777, and there will be an encampment where guests can experience life firsthand with the re-enactors.
In addition, there will be speakers before battles on both days. At 11 a.m. today, John Curry will portray frontier legend Lewis Wetzel, Floyd Barmann will speak about frontier architecture, and Nathan Kobuck will talk about Native American material culture.
After the 11 a.m. church service on Sunday, Karen Varench will provide a first-person presentation of Mary Draper Ingalls, who was taken and held prisoner by the Indians for several months before escaping and traveling more than 800 miles to freedom, and Bryan Cunning will appear as George Washington.
Entertainment will be provided by the Heritage Dancers and the musical group Gallow Glass, with ongoing demonstrations by the Applegate School of Needlework, gunsmith Bill Reynolds and Dr. Jessica Fisher in the 18th-century apothecary. Four performances of the “Punch and Judy” show also are scheduled.
