JEFFERSON, Ohio (AP) – Soap opera actor Freddie Smith has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the car crash that seriously injured his girlfriend in northeast Ohio.

The 26-year-old “Days of Our Lives” actor from Los Angeles lost control of a vehicle Oct. 7 in Ashtabula County. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor driving under the influence.

The Star-Beacon in Ashtabula reports Smith told a judge he fell asleep because he’d been drinking. His blood-alcohol level was .093, above Ohio’s legal limit of .08.

Twenty-seven-year-old actress Alyssa Tabit of North Hollywood, California, was seriously hurt but is recovering. They had returned to Smith’s hometown for a wedding.

Smith’s attorney said Wednesday Smith acknowledged in court that he’d made a terrible mistake.

His sentencing is scheduled Feb. 18.
