The 47th annual book sale of the American Association of University Women – Washington Branch will be held Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at Washington Crown Center during regular mall hours.

Donations of new and pre-owned books will be accepted at the book sale site after 8 p.m. Oct. 30. Specially priced “Bag Full of Books Sale” will be featured late afternoon on Nove. 2.

Youth groups seeking a community service project or service hours are welcome to help set up the book sale Thursday night. Call organizers to schedule volunteer hours.

The book sale has generated nearly $60,000 over the years for the organization’s “Returning Woman Scholarship,” which is awarded to women who have returned, or who plan to return, to college full time to finish a degree program. The scholarship complements AAUW’s mission to promote equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.

Scholarship amounts depend on the strength of the student’s application and available funds. Scholarship applicants must be residents of Washington County, be at or beyond the 30-credit level with at least a 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be in the process of applying to the college of their choice, or have already been accepted or are enrolled. Nurses pursuing a college degree must already be a registered nurse. Based on the number and quality of applications submitted, candidates may be asked to participate in an interview with the scholarship committee.

To obtain an application, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to “Returning Woman Scholarship,” AAUW-Washington, c/o Scholarship Chair, 3451 Route 40, Washington, PA 15301, or request an emailed application by emailing katsabol@comcast.net. Applications are reviewed on a periodic, rolling basis; there is no deadline to apply. However, applications should be received at least 60 days prior to intended enrollment to ensure proper time for review and disbursement of the scholarship.

For more information about the book sale, call AAUW president Elsie Knappenberger at 724-223-8457. For more information about the Returning Woman Scholarship, call scholarship committee chairwoman Kathy Sabol at 724-225-6710.
