The Washington Symphony Orchestra will complete its 2014-15 season May 2 with “For Honor and Glory,” a collection of pieces ranging from rousing to solemn, and ending with the “1812 Overture.”
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Trinity High School. Doors open at 7:15 p.m.
Joining the Symphony will be the Tsar Lazar Choir of Pittsburgh. The choir performs church and folk music from Serbia, Russia and Ukraine.
Theaudience will get a taste of the choir’s artistry with a 15-minute pre-concertat 7:35.
“The Tsar Lazar Choir is a group of men who sing in Eastern Orthodox churches around Pittsburgh,” music director Yugo Ikach said. “I sang with some of the men in the Opera Chorus in Pittsburgh years ago.”
The concert will open with the “American Salute” featuring familiar tunes, such as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” Guest narrator John Friedman will guide everyone through the “Gardens of Stone,” followed by a medley from the television program “Victory at Sea.”
“Friedman has one of those ‘James Earl Jones” kind of voices,” Ikach said. “It is very deep and moving.”
After intermission, the Tsar Lazar Choir will sing “Finlandia,” accompanied by the orchestras, and then head into “Troparion,” a short hymn without any instrumental accompaniment.
Taps will be played by Max Gonano and Robert Menear before the orchestra rejoins the choir for “Mansions of the Lord” from the film “We Were Soldiers.”
The WSO is working on a creative way to incorporate indoor “cannon fire” into the concert’s grand finale.
For history buffs, artifacts with local ties to notable conflicts, including the Civil War, will be on display in the lobby.
Tickets start at $17 and can be purchased online at washsym.org, by calling 888-71-TICKETS, or at the following locations: Washington Financial branches, Citizens Library and Peters Township Public Library.
