BAKERTON, W.Va. (AP) — A dog is being medically evaluated after his rescue from a water-filled West Virginia cave where he had been trapped for nearly two weeks.

The initial prognosis is good for the dog, which was retrieved from the cave after a Bakerton resident heard its barks. She said she had heard the barking for more than 10 days.

The Jefferson County animal control officer ultimately was called in, as well as volunteer firefighters and a swift-water rescue team

The dog was located atop a pile of rocks, above water.

While the dog was thin and dehydrated, a veterinarian said it was in pretty good shape.

The dog will likely go up for adoption.
