California University of Pennsylvania will explore the experience of living with disabilities and celebrate World Social Work Day at separate events on March 17.

The events include:

• The 10th annual Audrey-Beth Fitch Women’s Studies Conference, which focuses on “Stepping Inside the Personal, Public and Political Experience of (Dis)Abilities.” The conference will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the north wing of the Convocation Center.

It opens with the film “The Family Next Door,” a look at everyday life for a family in which two of four maturing children are on the autism spectrum. Director Barry Reese and the mother depicted in the film will be available to answer questions.

Afternoon sessions include a panel discussion, a talk about “Autism and Poverty” presented by licensed psychologist Dr. Daniel Marston, and a workshop with Rebecca Klaw, who has trained direct-care staff, teachers and parents in techniques that can benefit individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

• World Social Work Day, which is an international celebration of social work as a profession and a force for good in the world. The Social Work Department will host a series of talks and a potluck lunch with a global flavor.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Kara Alumni House. Dr. Mohamed Yamba, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and a native of Ghana, will deliver the keynote address at 9:30 a.m. A presentation by international graduate students will follow.

At 11 a.m., festivities move to Carter Hall, Room G6, for the potluck lunch and presentations by international students. Closing discussions are set for 1 to 2 p.m. in the Kara Alumni House.

Admission is free. Parking is available in the Vulcan Garage, off Third Street. Registration is requested; email young_e@calu.edu or calling 724-938-5910.
