Bartender Linda Hildebrand greets a customer recently at Elks Lodge 776 in Washington.

When a takeout order for two fish sandwiches comes packed in a traditional brown-paper shopping bag with twine handles, get ready for some serious eating.

But keep in mind that at Washington Elks Lodge 776, they don’t call them fish sandwiches. They call them fish subs – an appropriate moniker, because they’re a whopping submarine size.

The footlong baguette could barely hold the breaded, fried pescatarian delight. Takeout comes with a set of plasticware, convenient for dividing and conquering the sub so that more than one person can partake. Alongside the sub were super-crisp home-fried potato chips, skin on, that were delightfully puffy. Customers also are asked for their sauce preference.

Although the Elks Lodge is a private club, it opens its dining-room entrance doors to the public every Wednesday and Friday during Lent from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner. You’ll find a menu featuring the sub for $7, fish and chips for $6.50 and a seafood platter of fried shrimp, clams, fish nuggets and hushpuppies and fries for $9.99.
