DALLAS (AP) – Dorman Cordell, who served as chief of several bureaus in his career with the Associated Press, died at the age of 83.

Frances Cordell said her father died Saturday in hospice in Dallas after an illness.

The Kentucky native began his AP career in 1958. He went on to serve as chief of the AP bureaus for New Jersey, Colorado and Wyoming, Louisiana and Mississippi and Texas before retiring at age 46 in 1977.

He went on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Dallas before serving as an editor and senior scholar for The National Center for Policy Analysis for 10 years and an adjunct professor at Richland and El Centro colleges.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.
