National Pike Chapter of DAR recognizes local students
National Pike Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented its annual awards in American History, Youth Citizenship, Good Citizen and Junior American Citizens to students at John F. Kennedy Catholic School, Trinity Middle School and Trinity and McGuffey high schools.
The JAC contest theme was “Focusing on the Future.” Students were asked to interpret the theme by considering some of the following: What will America be like in the future? Who or what will be on the next national monument? Who will be the next American hero?
Students were judged on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, grammar, spelling, punctuation and neatness. Fifth- and sixth-grade winners from JFK were:
• Connor Behary – poster, first place on the local level and in Pennsylvania;
• Sophia Curry – short story, first place on the local level, in Pennsylvania, Eastern Division and on the national level;
• Alexis Ratcliff – poem, first place on the local level, in Pennsylvania and Eastern Division;
• Olivia Thomas – community service, individual entry, first place on the local level, Pennsylvania and Eastern Division, plus honorable mention on the national level;
• Sarah Barron, Samuel Nicolella, Jordan Ruffing and Lizzy Volz – community service, group entry, first place in Pennsylvania and Eastern Division, plus honorable mention on the national level.
• Angelina Greco, Myranda Johnson, Kaitlin Leadbitter, Vivian Poach and Krista Schuler – banner, group entry, first place in Pennsylvania and the Eastern Division, and third place on the national level.
Winners of the Trinity Middle School DAR Good Citizenship Award were selected by the school’s Social Studies Department based on the DAR qualifications of honor, service, patriotism, courage and leadership as evaluated by their teachers. Eighth-grade winners Julia Faust, Angela Pinkerton, Danylle Painter and Jaden Nelson received a medal and certificate.
Trinity Middle School American History winners were selected by the school’s Social Studies Department based on the DAR qualifications of academic achievement, motivation and personal interest in American history as evaluated by their teachers. Seventh-grade winners Michael Koroly, Michael Parrish, Ann Kozak and Marlaina Bozek received a medal and certificate.
Good Citizen winners were Brooke Dorsey of McGuffey High School and Juan Delgado of Trinity High School.
An additional award was given through the National Defense committee. A Military Ball was held April 11 at The George Washington hotel for Trinity High School ROTC students. Cadet Alyssa Knabb, a senior at Trinity High School, received a medal and certificate.
