Washington Rotary awards scholarships
The Rotary Club of Washington awarded seven academic awards and three community service awards to area students at its annual Student Awards Luncheon. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship as a part of the recognition.
Winners were:
• Emily Payne – Dr. David K. Scarborough/Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. Payne, daughter of Greg and Mary Payne, is a recent graduate of Washington & Jefferson College. She has accepted a one-year appointment as communications coordinator with W&J’s Office of Communications and then plans to pursue a doctorate in sociology.
• Kyle Kozlowski – Dr. Douglas Masciola/Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. Kozlowski, son of Kevin and Victoria Kozlowski, is a senior at Trinity High School and plans to study engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.
• Jenna Campbell – Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. Campbell, daughter of John and Melissa Campbell, is a senior at Avella Junior/Senior High School. She plans to attend Penn State University to study journalism.
• Samantha Kraeer – Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. Kraeer, daughter of David and Tammy Kraeer, is a senior at Burgettstown High School. She plans to attend Florida State University to study psychology.
• Matthew McDonald – Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. McDonald, son of James and Shari McDonald, is a senior at Fort Cherry High School. He plans to attend Westminster College to study public relations.
• Kyla Ranko – Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. Kyla, daughter of Ronald and Marcy Ranko, is a senior at McGuffey High School. She plans to attend Robert Morris University to study biology.
• Emeline Ferguson of McGuffey, Adam Hasson of Trinity and Jenna Shallcross of Washington – Clyde J. Tracanna/Washington Rotary Club Educational & Vocational Fund Scholarship, administered by the Washington County Community Foundation. The primary criterion is community service.
Ferguson, daughter of Scott and Bonnie Ferguson, is an active volunteer at her church, participating in mission trips, fish fries, mystery dinners and the worship committee. She plans to attend Grove City College to study mathematics.
Hasson, son of Brian and Diane Hasson, is an active volunteer at church and also volunteers his time in the Life Skills and Autistic Support program at Trinity High School. He plans to attend Penn State – Erie, the Behrend College, to study mechanical engineering.
Shallcross, daughter of Bryan and Amy Shallcross, volunteers with Highland Ridge Community Development, Citizens Library, the Whiskey Rebellion Festival and Grace Christian Dance Company. Shallcross also received the Rotary Academic Achievement Scholarship. She plans to attend Grove City College to study mathematics secondary education.
