The Washington Symphony Orchestra will embark on a journey of the mind with its next concert, “Dreamscapes,” which will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Trinity High School. Doors open at 7.

Guest conductor will be Samuel R. Hazo of Peters Township, a teacher, composer and conductor, and one of the works included in the “Dreamscapes” concert is Hazo’s own, “Everything Beautiful.” This will be the piece’s orchestral premiere.

“I was asked to compose a memorial for a dear friend and remarkable music educator in Kentucky named Charles Campbell,” Hazo said. “The composition is in three symbolic movements I will explain at the concert. The first movement is titled ‘The Stillness of Remembering,’ a beautiful line from a hit Fleetwood Mac song called ‘Dreams’ written by Stevie Nicks.”

The “Dreamscapes” concert also includes Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz from Sleeping Beauty,” Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” “Fetes” from Debussy’s “Nocturnes” and Mendelsshon’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Ben Artuso, a student at Trinity High School, also will be a special guest of the WSO as the winner of the 2016 Young Artist Competition. Artuso competed against other student musicians fromw Washington County to win this year’s $1,000 prize. At the concert, he will play Frederic Chopin’s Piano Concerto #1, 2nd Movement “Romanze.”

Artuso will be joined by the students in the WSO Side by Side program. Each February the program provides students the opportunity to play alongside the WSO’s seasoned musicians. This year’s students include Kaylyn Baker, McGuffey, flute; Meghan Johnson, Upper St. Clair, clarinet; Nicholas K. Dubina, Washington, percussion; Brendan Wilson, Trinity, violin; and Carly Croft, Trinity, cello.

Tickets start at $17 and can be purchased online at washsym.org, by calling 888-71-TICKETS, or at the following locations: Citizens Library, Peters Township Public Library and, by appointment only, at the WSO office, 11 S. College St., in Washington.
