The 49th annual Book Sale of the American Association of University Women – Washington Branch will be held Thursday through Saturday at Washington Crown Center.

The sale will be held during regular mall hours Thursday and Friday and until about 3 p.m. Saturday. The specially priced “Bag Full of Books Sale” will be held early Saturday afternoon.

Donations of new and “pre-owned” books will be accepted at the mall at the book sale site after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Youth groups looking for a community service project or service hours are needed to help set up the book sale Wednesday night; call book sale coordinators Betty Bull at 724-222-9114 or Elsie Knappenberger at 724-531-1416 to schedule volunteer hours.

The book sale has generated nearly $64,000 over the years for the organization’s “Returning Woman Scholarship,” which is awarded to women who have returned, or who plan to return, to college full time to finish a degree program. The scholarship complements AAUW’s mission to promote equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.

Scholarship amounts depend on the strength of the student’s application and available funds. Scholarship applicants must be residents of Washington County, be at or beyond the 30-credit level with at least a 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrate financial need.

Applicants must be in the process of applying to the college of her choice, or have already been accepted or currently enrolled. Nurses pursuing a college degree must already be a registered nurse. Based on the number and quality of applications submitted, candidates may be asked to participate in an interview with the scholarship committee.

Applications are reviewed on a periodic, rolling basis; there is no deadline to apply. However, applications should be received at least 60 days prior to intended enrollment to ensure proper time for review and disbursement of the scholarship.
