League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania hosts video contest
The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania invites Pennsylvania high school students to enter the third annual LWVPA High School Video Contest. The theme is “Every Election Matters!”
The contest is open to any team of students or individual students between 13 and 19 years old who are enrolled in high school in Pennsylvania. Contestants must create a 30-second public-service announcement video that encourages participation in the democratic process.
First-place winner will receive $1,000, second place, $500, and third place, $250. Submission deadline is midnight March 1. Winners will be announced April 1.
The contest was created to fight against the downward trend in civic engagement by young voters. In every presidential election since 1964, young voters between 18 through 24 have consistently voted at lower rates than all other age groups, and municipal election years often have dismal turnouts, despite the fact elected local government officials and judges have a direct impact on the voters in their district.
This year’s theme encourages high school students to explore the ways that these so-called “off-year elections” influence their lives.
