U-Bild: Workbench and quilt
Much more than a simple work surface, a fine woodworking bench is the heart of any well-equipped shop. A well-made bench incorporates precise angles and a level top that serve as gauges for other projects. In fact, the accuracy of the workbench can be a factor in determining the success of any given project.
This do-it-yourself version features a heavy, laminated top mounted on a solid trestle-style base, and includes a convenient storage bin underneath. There’s even a spot for a woodworking vise and bench stop on top.
While the project does demand careful measuring, cutting and finishing (especially of the top), the simplicity of the design makes it easy to get professional results. Construction is mostly a matter of cutting out the pieces, laminating the top and assembling with screws and carriage bolts.
The completed woodworking bench measures about 36 inches tall by 26 inches wide by 60 inches long, and is designed to accommodate a vise with a four- by seven-inch jaw.
The Woodworking Bench plan, No. 866, is $9.95 and includes directions.
A package of workbench projects, No. C150, is $16.95 and includes this plan plus a plan for a wall-mounted, folding workbench.
Upon close examination, it’s easy to see the time and effort that goes into an heirloom quilt. Perhaps you’d like to make one of these handmade treasures of your own, but the investment of time is discouraging – or even downright prohibitive. If only there was a magical shortcut that didn’t sacrifice quality for speed.
A full-color, 64-page guidebook, “7-Day Quilts,” will show you the way to find that shortcut, and there’s nothing magic about it. The book features eight original quilt designs that dramatically cut production time without compromising results.
Each design includes a materials list, cutting and piecing instructions and a full-color photo of the completed project. The balance of the book covers the “magic” – time-saving shortcuts like rotary cutting, stitch-and-flip and strip piecing, as well as batting and backing, binding and more.
Designs include “Roses Galore” (pictured), “Jitterbugs,” “Four-Patch Weave,” “Let’s Play Ball,” “Nine-Patch Novelty,” “Jungle Fever,” “Star-Crossed Garden” and “Diamonds & Nosegays.”
The “7-Day Quilts” guidebook, No. LA3691, is $13.95. In addition, you can find 11 original quilted designs in “Weekend Quilts,” No. LA1943, a 44-page guidebook for $9.95
