Tips for starting a walking program

• Check with you doctor before beginning any exercise program.
• Invest in a sturdy, comfortable pair of shoes.
• Begin slowly, on an even surface.
• Walk for five to 10 minutes; increase walk by two minutes a day.
• Work up to walking at a brisk pace for 30 minutes at least three times per week.
• Know your limits; slow down or stop if experiencing pain or shortness of breath.
