Here are some weight-loss tips from Jacqueline Ely, nutritional counselor at Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center

• Start slow and build on that. Pick one thing to change such as not eating out so much or cutting down on sugar and build on that.

• Don’t have an all or nothing attitude. If you slip out of your routine and backslide, don’t give up. Start again where you left off.

• Take the time to make a grocery list and plan out your meals so you don’t make bad choices.

• Have fruits and vegetables available at all times for a healthy snack.

• Avoid empty calories (potato chips, candy, sugary drinks).

• Drink plenty of water.

• Start your day with a nutrient-packed breakfast.

• One quarter of each meal should be lean protein, half should be veggies or fruit, and the other quarter should be grains and starches.

• Don’t skip lunch – this should be the largest meal to avoid late-night eating and large portion dinners.

• Consume the bulk of your calories for the day before dinner.
