HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett’s administration says about 30,000 families whose kids are covered by Pennsylvania’s health insurance program for children have until 2015 to switch them to Medicaid.
Corbett’s office said Wednesday the extra time to switch from the Children’s Health Insurance Program is being allowed by the federal government.
The U.S. Health and Human Services Department says the switch is required by the 2010 federal health care law that expands Medicaid to more low-income adults. The deadline to switch had been 2014, but Secretary Kathleen Sebelius offered in September to cooperate in a phased-in transition.
The switch affects children whose family income is between 100 percent and 133 percent of the federal poverty level. The state Insurance Department says notices will be mailed from CHIP insurance carriers this month.
