Cmdr. Kenneth R. Shook, who is assigned as the fleet operational law counsel at the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, is retiring from the military. His parents are Carol J. Walker of Washington and Roy E. Shook of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Fayette City. Shook, who grew up in Washington and was a student in the Trinity School District, entered military service when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Penn State University in 1989, and later that year was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. Following flight training at the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Fla., Shook was designated a naval flight officer. He then served as an F-14 radar intercept officer with VF-74, and during that tour, he was deployed onboard the USS Saratoga and attended Fighter Weapons School, Topgun. In 1997, Shook resigned his active duty commission, joined the Naval Air Reserves Tactical Control Squadron 2186 at the Naval Air Base at Little Creek in Norfolk, Va., then went to law school. In 2000, he earned his juris doctor from the College of William and Mary Law School and was admitted to the Virginia State Bar. He entered a private law practice, but returned to active duty in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 2001. In 2010, he earned a master of laws in national security and U.S. foreign relations law from George Washington University School of Law. Shook is admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the armed forces, the Supreme Court of Virginia and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. His personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and various unit awards and citations.
