Jefferson-Morgan School District is currently working to “stuff the bus” with donations for their weekend food program.

The school is accepting donations of food that are shelf-stable, single-serve and kid-friendly to send home with students at the end of the week.

Donations were collected at the high school through Friday. Giant Eagle in Dry Tavern will accept donations Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Jefferson-Morgan Weekend Food Program helps feed students outside school, and participants are selected confidentially by a team of school officials. Bags are packed every other week and placed into lockers at the end of the day the last day of each week. Bags are under five pounds so elementary students can get them home. Fresh produce is provided, along with easily prepared and child-friendly meals. Each bag contains enough for breakfast, lunch and dinner each weekend day and two snacks.

Items commonly included in the bags include canned pasta and soup, ramen noodles, fruit cups, raisins and other dried fruit, Pop Tarts, individual cereal boxes and bowls, individual juices, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, bakery snacks, chips, instant oatmeal, cookies and crackers that are individually wrapped, microwave popcorn and Jell-O cups.
