Prime Stage Theatre seeks several actors to play a variety of roles in the regional premiere of the stage adaptation of Dr. Maya Angelou’s classic biography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

Needed are African-American men and women between the ages of 20 and 50, and an African-American female aged 15 to 18 for the role of Young Maya.

Auditions will be scheduled every five minutes from 1 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 17 and from 7 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Prime Stage Studio lower entrance, 840 Saw Mill Run Boulevard in the West End.

Actors are asked to bring a resume and current headshot. All auditioners will read scenes from the play. Copies of the scenes are available on the Prime Stage website at www.primestage.com. In addition, auditioners are asked to prepare an a cappella song, preferably gospel, jazz, blues or R&B. There are no solo songs in the play, but there will be group songs in a few scenes.

Call-backs are planned for Dec. 19.

Actors are asked to email Prime Stage at auditions@primestage.com and provides their names, requested audition date and time and a phone number. A production representative will call to confirm scheduled date and time.

Rehearsals will begin on Jan. 28 and performances are scheduled from March 9-18, 2018 at the New Hazlett Theater Center for the Performing Arts, Allegheny Square on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Pittsburgh theater veteran and Point Park University alum Monteze Freeland is directing.
