Waynesburg U. to host GNP concert, spring student showcases
Spring is in the air, and Waynesburg University is set to showcase the work of their students this semester with several music and art events in April. All events are free and open to the public.
The Waynesburg University Players will put on three one-act plays written and directed by students Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center. The works cover a variety of topics: a mother-daughter relationship, a husband dealing with depression and a family coping with the loss of a son.
The University Symphonic Band and the Lamplighter Concert Choir will perform at the university’s spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Roberts Chapel. The groups are set to perform a variety of pieces, including one with the James D. Randolph Kiltie Band.
Students will get a chance to showcase their art at the Spring Student Art Exhibition, April 16-27 in the Benedum Fine Arts Gallery. An opening night reception at 6 p.m. April 16 will kick off the event. This semester’s show will feature works by 50 students from mostly non-art majors.
Finally, the university will host the Gross National Product’s 48th-anniversary concert April 21.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 7 p.m.
GNP is a spring musical reunion for original band members and local musicians. It’s a performance that has continued to evolve over the years to feature more than 20 musicians, both local and from across the country, playing together once a year for a few hours. With the band’s first visit to the Waynesburg College campus in 1970, performers this year include Waynesburg University faculty, staff, students and alumni.
GNP started in the mid-1960s in New Jersey.
Musical genres for the “big show in a small town” will range from rock and jazz to bluegrass and country. The school’s television students will hone their skills by providing the live feed for the wall monitors in the venue.
