Those who love sharing the spirit of the season with lights, wreaths and scenery might have what it takes to win bragging rights for the best outdoor Christmas display in the Mon Valley.

North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park Recreation Commission is sponsoring its second annual Holiday Decoration Contest, which also serves as a fundraiser.

“This year, we are opening up the contest for everyone in the Mon Valley,” said R.J. Sokol, a North Belle Vernon councilman and coordinator of the contest. “It’s a way to cross boundary lines and inspire different communities to work together to spread holiday cheer.”

Contestants are invited to send photos of their home or business to nbvborough@gmail.com or post them on North Belle Vernon Community Bank Park’s Facebook page. The public will vote for their favorite pictures simply by “Liking” the photos. The pictures with the most “Likes” will be declared the winners at midnight on Dec. 21. Cost to enter the contest is $5 per residence and $10 per business.

Numerous prizes will be awarded, including: $200, first place for business; $100, second place for business; $50, third place for business; $100, first place for residence; $75, second place for residence; and $50, third place for residence.

Sokol noted that all proceeds will benefit the Belle Vernon Public Library.

“Our library is a tremendous asset for the entire Mon Valley,” said Sokol. “We hope to make some improvements to the library with funds raised from this event.”

Entry fees can be mailed to the North Belle Vernon Recreation Commission at 503 Speers St., Belle Vernon, PA 15012 or dropped off at the North Belle Vernon Borough Office.
