Church aids flood victims
First United Presbyterian Church of Houston opened Fellowship Hall to Houston flood victims Feb. 15.
The Rev. Emily Miller was thankful the church could help and grateful for members of the congregation who participated. Several families and their pets were displaced when floodwaters rose on South Main Street, Pike Street and Western Avenue. It was the third time in six months the community was affected by flooding.
Harlan Shober, a church elder and Washington County commissioner, was instrumental in organizing the operation with the American Red Cross. Bo and Vicky Lesjak, members of the congregation, assisted families until they were placed with loved ones or temporary housing the following morning.
