Bethel Art Guild will meet at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Bethel Park Community Center on Park Avenue. Guest speaker William Phahl will discuss palette, composition and gesture as he demonstrates an oil portrait. Phahl is an award-winning artist who taught in Pittsburgh Public Schools for 12 years and still teaches summer painting workshops to teens and adults in oil and pastel at the Touchstone Center for Crafts.

Carmichaels Women’s Civic Club will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 1 in Carmichaels Methodist Church’s fellowship hall for its annual arts program. All entries of the “The Arts Kaleidoscope” contest will be on display. Contest winners from the Carmichaels Area School District will be recognized. Beverly Demott, local artist, will be the guest speaker. Members may bring a guest. New members are welcome. For information, call 724-966-2486.

Church of the Covenant Preschool will accept registrations for September on Feb. 2. Registration times are 9 a.m. to 1 pm. at the church on East Beau Street. Classes are offered for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. For information or to receive a registration packet, call 724-222-0190 ext. 121.

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts School will host an experimental printmaking workshop, “Prints and Pints,” in concert with the 2017 Artist and Emerging Artist of the Year Exhibitions from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 2. Full Pint Brewing Co. will offer complimentary beer tasting. Haylee Ebersole will lead a tour of her exhibition, New Works, Cost is $30 for members of PF/PCA and $40 for non-members. The Appalachian Regional Commission’s public workshop about the 2018 POWER Initiative to help Appalachia’s coal-impacted communities diversify their economies is scheduled in our area from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at California University of Pennsylvania. These workshops will focus on the objectives of the 2018 POWER Initiative, review eligibility requirements, and offer guidance on how to develop a competitive funding proposal. The workshops will include information on the latest research about coal-impacted communities, case studies about successful POWER investments, and time for networking. Each meeting is free and open the public and will include a light breakfast and lunch. Register online at www.arc.gov/workshops.
