The Buffalo Creek Watershed Association plans to host birding and free fishing on June 24.

Birdwatchers Larry Helgerman and Mary Grey will lead an exploration at Dutch Fork Lake, part of the Buffalo Creek Watershed.

Local birders will meet at 7:30 a.m. that day in the Dutch Fork Lake large parking area off Lake Road in Donegal Township.

The lot is a mile north of Route 40 between Claysville and West Alexander.

This walking and driving tour will encompass open lake water, shore line, stream banks, mature forests and wetlands in hopes of seeing a variety of birds.

During a recent bird walk in the watershed, 72 different species of birds were seen or heard. On June 24, participants will walk a back road from the Hicks Lane Bridge. Organizers ask that those going on the walk dress for the weather with comfortable footwear. They suggest bringing bottled water, a camera, binoculars and a snack.

The state Fish and Boat Commission is also sponsoring a free fishing program that day at Dutch Fork Lake. No license is required.

Basic fishing skills such as knot tying, casting, baiting a hook and removing the hook from a fish will be covered. Fishing equipment will be provided at no charge.

“The catch is that all adults must bring a child and all children must be accompanied by an adult,” said Donna Riggle, secretary of the Buffalo Creek Watershed Association, which will provide water and snacks.

Those who will be fishing should bring a portable chair. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with instruction to be held in the lake’s large parking area. The event lasts until 5 p.m.

Participants must register by Wednesday, and space is limited.
