New congregation moves into the former Broad Street Baptist Church
At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the bell atop the rambling church at Broad Street and McCarrell Avenue in Washington will once again ring.
Exactly one year after forming, the Rev. Tim Lindsay’s congregation, Arise Christian Fellowship, has found a permanent home in the former Broad Street Baptist Church, a place he had never stepped foot in a month ago.
“God is opening doors,” said Lindsay from 682 Broad St. “It’s happened quickly and smoothly. God led us here.”
The nondenominational church came together in March 2017. The congregation of about 75 rented a place to worship – first in Lone Pine Community Center, then in Faith Christian School, Washington – before finding their new dwelling in the city’s West End neighborhood.
The final service of Broad Street Baptist Church was held Jan. 7.
“Our board sat down with Broad Street’s board. They came to our service,” said Lindsay. “They are happy another church organization is in their church.”
On Feb. 24, most of Lindsay’s congregation got to work, cleaning and preparing to move in. The structure, which was built in the 1800s, is large, with many rooms to suit their needs.

“The congregation visited and every one of them said they felt peace here,” he said.
With members who range from “newborn to their 80s,” Lindsay feels a need to reach out to youth. In the new space, there is a dedicated youth lounge, and Lindsay has plans to form a youth group, as well as add Wednesday evening services.
“Now we have the space to do it,” he said.
Arise’s services are contemporary, with music a major part of worship.
“This is not a sit down and sing hymns church,” said Lindsay. “We stand on our feet, clap and get involved. Our contemporary style of worship is just incredible. It draws people in.”
The church was born, he said, from a desire to follow God’s word.
“We are nondenominational for a reason,” Lindsay said. “We’re real people with real issues. ‘Just be real.’ I say it all the time.”
Lindsay and his wife, Pam, who grew up in the area, feel a calling to be in their new neighborhood.
“We believe we can touch this community, make an impact and bring people to Christ,” he said. “We plan on being a church that goes out into the community, rather than expecting the community to come into the church.”
Lindsay said several neighbors have already stopped in to meet him. He’s hoping they, and previous members of Broad Street Baptist, give his church a try.
“We want to be a part of the community, and have the community be a part of us,” he said.
Arise Christian Fellowship will hold their first service at at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with fellowship after the service. Sunday school for all ages is held at 9:30.
