Tri-County Leathernecks celebrate successful Toys for Tots drive in Greene County
The Tri-County Leathernecks celebrated their 35th year with another successful Toys for Tots drive for Greene County children.
More than 900 children received toys during the distribution drive Dec. 16 at four locations across the county. It was the most successful drive in the organization’s history, according to John “Buzz” Walters, who serves as commandant of the Leathernecks. Still, it was somewhat of a melancholy event this year without his “right hand man,” Murray Williams, a founding member who died in March at age 93.
“We’ve come a long way,” Walters said about when the group formed in November 1982 at Caputo’s Dry Tavern Inn. “The support has been great this year.”

Walters thanked all of those who supported the drive, either through fundraising efforts at the Moose Lodge, various toy donations or working at the four distribution centers. Tom Hollywood contributed more than 100 bicycles for the Toys for Tots drive, Walters said.
