Luongo – 100 years
Rose Luongo of Washington celebrated her 100th birthday at the Triple Crown Banquet Room at the Meadows with more than 100 guests in attendance, including family and dignitaries.
She was born on May 7, 1918, in Marianna, and is the only surviving member of her immediate family, which now includes five generations.
Her husband is the late John Luongo, who was a World War II veteran, volunteer fireman, Washington County policeman and magistrate. The couple had one son, the late Dr. Daniel (Sandra) Luongo.
She has three granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
At her birthday celebration, Mrs. Luongo was honored for her work with the Washington County Republican Committee. State Sen. Camera Bartolotta presented Mrs. Luongo with the Pennsylvania Senate Proclamation in recognition of her birthday and her community service. Commissioner Larry Maggi presented her with an acknowledgement from the Washington County Board of Commissioners. Mrs. Luongo also received a letter of recognition from Gov. Tom Wolf, and recognition from Judge John DiSalle and Tom Uram.
Mrs. Luongo was also recognized for her service with the American Legion, of which her membership spans 70 years. The Rev. Feeney and members of the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters recognized her membership at Immaculate Conception Church and her work with the Christian Mothers.
A homemaker for most of her married life, Mrs. Luongo worked in a Washington plant during the war, loading hand grenades. She also held appointed positions in the courthouse.
