Veterans events planned in Greene
The Greene County Veterans Affairs Office announced several events planned to honor veterans.
The annual Greene County Veterans Day Parade, sponsored by the Veterans Council of Greene County, will be held Sunday in Waynesburg. Area veterans will be recognized for their service.
The parade line-up will begin at 9 a.m., with units in place by 10:25. The parade, which begins at 10:45, will proceed down High Street to the Greene County Courthouse for a special program that will feature the ringing of the bells and a moment of silence at 11. All parade participants and units will stop for the observance of area veterans’ sacrifice.
This year’s parade theme is the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, which is when World War I ended in 1918. This year’s parade grand marshal is Lena Stoner, a veteran of World War II. After her discharge, Stoner became a teacher in the Central Greene School District.
Immediately following the parade, a ceremony will be held at Waynesburg VFW Post 4793, located at 455 Lincoln Street. Refreshments will be provided by the VFW Post 4793 Ladies Auxiliary.

The official dedication of Greene County’s new World War I Memorial, which is located between the Greene County Historical Society Museum and the county’s tennis courts, at the intersection of Rolling Meadows Road and Garards Fort Road in Waynesburg will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The ceremony will honor the 1,000-plus Greene County men and women who left their homes to go to war during WWI, and particularly the 58 local soldiers – “the Rain Day Boys” – who gave everything for their country. Following the ceremony, visitors will be able to visit the memorial and the Greene County Historical Society Museum to view its WWI exhibit for Greene County’s soldiers’ and community history.
