As students move from junior to senior high, the need to start planning for their future becomes greater.

In response, the Washington School District and Intermediate Unit 1 are coordinating a free “Transition Fair” for students, parents and the community from noon to 3 p.m. Friday in the high school’s gym.

Denise Bird, a teacher and co-coordinator of this year’s transition fair, is working with Chris Bokulich from the Intermediate Unit I on organizing the 2019 Transition Fair. To date, there are 43 participants, including local colleges such as California University of Pennsylvania, Washington & Jefferson College, Penn Commercial and Penn State-Fayette, as well as employers such as Dynamet, and services such as the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, TRPIL and TEC.

Recruiters for military service will also be on hand to discuss those opportunities.

Washington School District students in seventh through 12th grades will have an opportunity to meet with professionals from various colleges, trade schools, and community services and programs to help make some of their future planning a little less stressful. Parents are also invited to come and explore some of the options available to their sons and daughters.

“Other districts have been invited as well and a few may be bringing some of their students,” Bird said.

Past transition fairs have focused on the high school, but this one will include the junior high students. Bird said that “the earlier the exposure to what types of additional education and training are available, the better for students (and parents) to make informed choices for their future. “

Bokulich said that the Intermediate Unit 1 works with school districts in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties, and hosting this type of event is particularly helpful to students and parents.

“There are just so many agencies with different programs from the four-year colleges to others that are geared for students who wish to learn a specific skill to move into the workforce more quickly,” Bokulich said. “Bringing them together is a great way to make things happen for the students.”
