Dr. Andrew Goudy was sworn-in Jan. 20 as the new president of the NAACP’s Washington Branch during a service at Nazareth Baptist Church honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Goudy said his top priority as NAACP president would be to help disadvantaged minority students in Washington County to receive a good education.

Goudy graduated from Trinity Area High School and then went on to obtain bachelor and masters degrees in chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He later obtained a doctorate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Goudy has worked as a chemistry teacher in the Canon-McMillan School District and as a chemistry professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and Delaware State University. He recently retired from Delaware State University and moved back to Washington, where he grew up.

Other NAACP members who were installed include: Phyllis Waller, first vice president; Emanuel Archie, second vice president; Carolyn Dunklin, secretary; LaVette Archie, assistant secretary; Carla Ivery, treasurer; and Jeanette Fedd, assistant treasurer. Washington County Judge Tracy McDonald Kemp performed the installation.
