ALDI is on the verge of producing produce in Peters Township.
The large grocery retailer will launch the new store at 9 a.m. Thursday. The address is 4041 Washington Road, although it is better known locally as the site of the Kmart retail store that shut down in the McDowell Shops in mid-October.
ALDI did not specify in an email how much space this store will occupy, but plans provided to the township in January called for 22,000 square feet. Kmart occupied 90,000 square feet, so there is room for other tenants.
This will be the second ALDI store in Washington County, joining the Trinity Point location in South Strabane Township. There is an ALDI just across the county line, in Bridgeville, Allegheny County.
Opening-day shoppers in Peters will have the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes in which one could win a year’s supply of ALDI produce.
The Essen, Germany-based company has more than 1,800 stores in 35 states, and is opening the McMurray location as part of a $3.4 billion investment to expand to 2,500 nationwide by December 2022.
ALDI touts its stores as being “designed to save shoppers time and money” and says it has significantly expanded offerings.
“We combine great food with affordable prices,” J.R. Perry, Saxonburg division vice president, said in a statement.
Hours at the Peters location will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
