Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the company president’s name and an additional donation to the Fisher House Foundation.

Eighty Four-based 84 Lumber reached out to a nonprofit focused on military veterans Wednesday afternoon.

The company donated $25,000 to Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House, whose mission is to provide a comfortable place to stay for families with a member receiving inpatient medical care through the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. The company also plans to donate $500,000 to the Fisher House Foundation over the next three years.  The event took place at the South Fayette Township 84 Lumber complex on Presto Sygan Road.

Company president Maggie Hardy Knox presented the check to Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House. The money, according to a news release from 84 Lumber, will enable the organization to stock the kitchen and cabinets with two years’ worth of groceries; or provide 50 catered/prepared meals for families staying at the house; or pay for six months of lodging at Family House, which is nearby, when Fisher House is fully occupied.

May is Military Appreciation Month, and about 40 veterans and their families were expected to attend, including Army veteran Alejandro Villanueva, a Steelers offensive lineman. Former Steelers defensive tackle Brett Keisel was scheduled to appear as well.

This is the fourth May in a row 84 Lumber has conducted its Operation Appreciation campaign to acknowledge current and former military members.

Founded in 1956, 84 Lumber is the nation’s top privately held supplier of building materials, manufactured components and industry-leading services for single- and multi-family residences and commercial buildings.
