Cameos of Caring Award presented to nurse

Monongahela Valley Hospital presented the Cameos of Caring Award to Douglas Myers, an operating room nurse at the hospital, on May 9.
Myers was one of 13 nurses nominated by their peers for the prestigious award. To be nominated, a nurse must demonstrate excellence in nursing care and provide compassionate patient care while serving as mentors for their fellow nurses.
When Myers was in high school, in the hospital recovering from surgery, he had a male nurse on the night shift who “spent an entire evening” telling him the virtues of a nursing career. In 1996, he received his associate’s degree in nursing from Penn State University. He joined the staff of Mon Valley Hospital in 2000. During his 19-year career, Myers provided care to patients and their families on 7-West, 6-West, 6-East and most recently in the operating room, where he has been for the past 12 years.
“Being an OR nurse, I see firsthand what the latest in surgical medicine can do,” he said. “New technologies come out every year that make the impossible possible. I am most proud of the fact that I have a small part in a patient’s recovery that will help them live a normal life again.”
