At the 7th Annual Central Greene Scholarship Trust’s (CGST) Trivia Contest, players can register with a group of friends or go it alone, combining with an existing team. Either way, the teams will compete to earn between one and five points per round.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Central Greene High School Cafeteria, will tap your knowledge in a broad range of subjects. The friendly competition’s goal is to raise money for both county charities and scholarships for students in the county’s five school districts.
The doors open at 5 p.m., and the competition starts at 6, when the quiz master poses the first of the contest’s 50 questions.
The CGST board came up with the questions for this year’s contest, which includes 11 completion questions and True or False. The rest are multiple choice.
“I cannot reveal the category subjects because it might give some teams an unfair advantage,” said Mike Camilli, Central Greene math teacher and CGST executive director. “I will say that some of the categories will have an interesting twist or play on words.”
The cost for a four-member team is $30 per player while teams with five or more members the cost is $25 per player. As of October 1, Camilli reports that 20 teams have already registered. Walk-ins who haven’t registered previously, can join an already existing team, if the event can accommodate them.
Spectators are also invited to watch the event after paying a $10 admission fee. Both participants and observers will get complimentary pizza, soft drinks and bottled water. Attendees may also bring in their own snacks, but alcohol and tobacco are not permitted on school property.
“In the future, if we need to move to a larger venue, we’d like to be able to serve beer,” Camilli said.
Each team gets to designate a charity of choice. The teams that come in first, second and third place will win for their charities $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively. During the event, additional money is raised through a bake sale, a series of Chinese auctions and a 50-50 drawing.
Over the past six years, the contest has awarded thirty-nine $500 scholarships to county students for a total of $19,500. More than $15,000 has also been awarded local charities, the vast majority of which are based in Greene County.
“Last year, we had a total of 120 participants, and this year we’re hoping to top the 200 mark,” Camilli said. “Originally, we awarded scholarships to just students at Central Greene. However, our success is what allows us to present scholarships to students in all five school districts.”
Scholarship application information is sent to all the school districts at the beginning of March and the applications must be returned to CGST by the beginning of April. The scholarships are open to all Greene County students planning to attend college for two or four years. The scholarship money is given to each student after the successful completion of their first semester.
“In the past, we’ve received several letters from the scholarship recipients telling us how grateful they were for our support,” Camilli said.
This year’s event co-sponsors are Community Bank and the Central Greene Education Association
“All of our donors and sponsors will be recognized on the CGST Facebook page and also projected on a screen during the competition,” Camilli said.
