With its concerts from September through December having been called off due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra announced a “reinvented” 2020-21 season Tuesday.
The symphony will have a new series of digital programs in the fall that will be offered free of charge. The programs will include the symphony’s ensembles and will incorporate community artists and partners when possible. The symphony’s 125th anniversary celebration will move from Oct. 3 to Feb. 27, 2021, the anniversary of the first Pittsburgh Symphony concert in 1896. The concerts dedicated to compositions by Gustav Mahler that had been scheduled for Feb. 26-28, 2021, will not be performed due to health and safety guidelines surrounding choirs.
The Pittsburgh Symphony is planning on returning to Heinz Hall in January 2021, subject to ongoing public health guidance and government regulations. Tickets and subscriptions to the 2021 mini-season will be announced in the fall.
