Poet Nikki Giovanni will be at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Truthsayers speaker series.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Giovanni has published numerous poetry collections, essays, and children’s books. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including Women of the Year awards from Ebony and Mademoiselle magazines; Governor’s awards from both Tennessee and Virginia; keys to more than two dozen cities; some 30 honorary doctorates; and, most recently, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the Poetry Foundation.

The Truthsayers speaker series is an ongoing program bringing luminaries to the August Wilson African American Cultural Center to reflect on current events in hopes of inspiring racial awareness and understanding between people.
