The California Area Historical Society and Center in the Woods are co-sponsoring a program entitled “The Legends and Realities of the Underground Railroad in Eastern Washington County.”

The program will be held at the Center in the Woods on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. Guest speaker for the event is Dr. W. Thomas Mainwaring, who will critically examine the evidence regarding this fabled institution.

Mainwaring is an emeritus professor of history at Washington & Jefferson College. He taught at the college for over three decades, serving as department chair for nine years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

His book, “Abandoned Tracks: The Underground Railroad in Washington County, Pennsylvania” (University of Notre Dame Press, 2018), was the silver winner of the Foreward Indies Book Awards multicultural category for 2018. The book will be available for sale during the evening.

Parking for the event is at the Center in the Woods, 130 Woodland Court, off Route 88, across from University Park. The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
