The Washington Wild Thing
In minor league baseball, mascots are a major deal. The Wild Thing, mascot for the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League, is a fan favorite who makes kids smile by giving a high-five and older fans chuckle with a pat on the head. His job is to make the game more fun for the fans who root on the Wild Things, and the Wild Thing, who hails from the South, never fails to entertain. Here’s a conversation with the Washington Wild Thing.
Q. How were you discovered at Consol Energy Park?
A. When the field was under construction in 2001-02, the crew said they spotted something wild. I became a regular around the construction site, and because I was fascinated with baseball, the Wild Things adopted me as the Washington Wild Things’ mascot.
Q. Where are you from?
A. I am originally from the swamps of Mississippi, but I consider myself a Washingtonian now!
Q. What are your favorite foods?
A. Hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jacks. I get them fresh from the Consol Energy Park concession stands.
Q. White size shoe do you wear?
A. Size 17!!!!!
Q. What are your favorite activities?
A. I love watching the Wild Things, riding my four-wheeler around the ballfield and launching T-shirts to fans. That’s fun.
Q. Is it true you’re the No. 1 Wild Things fan?
A. Absolutely! I’ve never missed a home game, not once in 12 years. I love rooting for my favorite team and leading the crowd in team cheers. I love to meet and greet baseball fans at Consol Energy Park, and I like to make appearances at schools and events whenever I have free time.
Q. What’s your advice to kids on how they should enjoy a Wild Things game?
A. I don’t think kids need advice on how to enjoy a Wild Things game. It comes naturally. You get there and see the players, grab a couple of autographs and then go to your seat. During the game, I always suggest a funnel cake or some ice cream, but only if Mom and Dad approve. My personal favorites, as I mentioned, are peanuts and cracker jacks. And then just root, root, root, for our Wild Things!
Q. Have you ever played baseball?
A. Gosh, I wish I could say yes! I have a catch every now and again, but I’ve never actually played baseball. Maybe some day Bart Zeller will notice me. Do you think?
Q. You must love your job!
A. I have the best job in the world, bar none! I can’t imagine life without the Washington Wild Things. I so look forward to baseball season. I sometimes get sad in the off season, but we’re always looking forward to the spring!
Q. Do you come from a large family?
A. Yes, but my family is still in Mississippi. I have several dozen siblings. My mom and dad had a few litters!
Q. What makes Consol Energy Park the nicest ballpark in the Frontier League?
A. The people, mostly. But it’s also beautiful, bright, safe and convenient. The Wild Things’ Nation is the best, though.
