You don’t have to be Dorothy Hamill to lace up a pair of ice skates and take a spin around the ice rink at the top-rate facility in Southpointe. Regardless of skill level, skating is a fun way to pass the afternoon on a cold winter day.
Iceoplex offers public skating throughout the year, but the schedule varies. Cost is $10, and includes skate rental; children 5 and under are free, with a $3 skate rental fee. Figure skating and ice skating lessons also are available.
For skate times, call 724-745-6666.
Winter can be a great time to jump on the Montour Trail.
Tandem Connection, a family-owned and operated bike shop, offers fat bikes with 4.7-inch wide, knobby tires that cruise through the snow. Rental cost is $15 an hour or $45 per day.
Also this year, Tandem Connection will offer cross-country skiing equipment, available by reservation. Call the store for pricing.
And if you’re walking or riding on the trail on a cold day, stop in Tandem Connection to warm up by the two large fireplaces, and grab a hot chocolate or a sandwich at the Bike Shop Grille, open seven days a week.

Duck inside the 199-year-old LeMoyne House on a cold day to visit Pennsylvania’s first national Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad. It’s one of only a few other such sites that exist in the United States, and tours are available Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The house at 49 East Maiden St. in downtown Washington was owned by John Julius LeMoyne, who opened his home as a stop along the Underground Railroad. Now a museum, the LeMoyne House is filled with period artifacts. For information, call 724-225-6740 or visit wchs@wchspa.org.
