Residents of Washington, East Washington and Canton Township are being asked to “Light Up The Night Against Crime” Friday to help deter crimes such as thefts and burglaries this holiday season.

Washington police Chief Robert Lemons said he has been working with different crime-watch groups to encourage residents to turn on the lights, whether porch lights or even decorations, starting at 6 p.m.

“Usually, the numbers of burglary and thefts start going up this time of year, not only of homes but businesses,” Lemons said.

Lemons also reminded residents to be careful when placing packages in their vehicles, particularly at this time of the year. He suggests putting packages in the trunk, if possible.

“Criminals will start looking for easy targets,” Lemons said. “Vehicles should always be locked, and nothing of value should be in plain view.”

The chief also suggests turning on lights on both the inside and outside of your home to prevent your house from being targeted by thieves and burglars.

“Make sure all doors are locked,” he added. “And make sure valuables can’t be seen from the outside.”

Lemons said neighbors need to be helping neighbors, especially this time of year,

“Neighbors need to be more vigilant and watch out for each other,” Lemons said. “Keep a watch out for vehicles or people who seem out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. If you are suspicious, call 911 and an officer will check it out.

“Business owners need to do the same,” he added. “Robberies increase. Take note of someone loitering around your store.”
