WAYNESBURG – The boxes of donated toys have been rounded up from their locations at banks, stores and businesses around the county and are ready to be given out to families who need help with their Christmas shopping.

On Saturday, the Greene County Leathernecks Toys for Tots volunteers will be distributing toys to girls and boys from 10 a.m. until noon at the Greene County Fairgrounds, Greensboro Fire Hall, Carmichaels American Legion and St. Thomas Church, Clarksville.

“None of us is getting any younger, so we coordinated our efforts with the Marine Corp League of Washington County this year,” longtime Leatherneck Buzz Walters said. “Parents need to bring proof of income and know the social security numbers of their kids. Anything we have left over goes to Salvation Army.”

“We use some of those extra toys that the Leathernecks donate for families in crisis over Christmas and the rest goes to our birthday club,” Army manager Sister Audrey Quinn said. “Parents can bring in proof of the birthday month on shot records or other identification and the child gets to pick out a toy. All our toys stay in Greene County and they all go to kids. We’ve been filling Christmas toy requests through Treasures for Kids in coordination with Catholic Charities Angel Tree all week. This year every family that comes in gets to pick out a hat and scarf set that Pat Karvan knit for us and they’re a big hit. Some of the families seem to like them better than the toys.”
