McMURRAY – The director of the Meals On Wheels program that supplies nutritious meals to the elderly in Peters Township and surrounding areas, was relieved township council agreed Monday not to increase the rent the nonprofit pays for space in the township-owned fire department building.
Currently, Meals On Wheels pays the township $4,000 a month, which includes utilities. Council considered increasing the rent to $5,000 a month when the current five-year lease expires Dec. 31. Susan Ruether Hanawalt, director and president of the agency’s board, expressed concern Tuesday as to how the nonprofit could have raised an additional $1,000 a month.
After discussion, council agreed to retain the current $48,000 annual rent, including utilities, for the next two years.
Hanawalt said she is relieved the rent will remain the same, but added she felt the community might be surprised and horrified knowing the nonprofit agency must pay the township $4,000 a month just to rent the space.
