A charge of theft by deception filed against the mayor of Monongahela was withdrawn Tuesday after he repaid the approximately $2,300 he owed in a loan.

Mayor Robert Kepics was charged in a private criminal complaint with theft by deception after John and Shirley Amons of New Eagle claimed he failed to repay all of the $3,935 they loaned him in April 2011. They filed the complaint with District Judge Mark Wilson that was approved by Assistant District Attorney Joshua Carroll. Kepics was briefly jailed on the charge.

District Attorney Gene Vittone, upon learning of the case, said last week that it was a civil matter and not criminal. He said that he would have the charge withdrawn.

Kepics said that he repaid the Amons their money on Monday.
